ISO Spectroscopy of Gas and Dust: From Molecular Clouds to Protoplanetary Disks
نویسنده
چکیده
Observations of interstellar gas-phase and solid-state species in the 2.4–200 μm range obtained with the spectrometers on board the Infrared Space Observatory are reviewed. Lines and bands due to ices, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, silicates and gas-phase atoms and molecules (in particular H2, CO, H2O, OH and CO2) are summarized and their diagnostic capabilities illustrated. The results are discussed in the context of the physical and chemical evolution of star-forming regions, including photon-dominated regions, shocks, protostellar envelopes and disks around young stars.

The penetration of FUV radiation into molecular clouds
Context. FUV radiation strongly affects the physical and chemical state of molecular clouds, from protoplanetary disks to entire galaxies. Aims. The solution of the FUV radiative transfer equation can be complicated if the most relevant radiative processes such us dust scattering and gas line absorption are included, and have realistic (non–uniform) properties, i.e. if optical properties are de...
متن کاملMolecular Hydrogen Emission from Protoplanetary Disks II. Effects of X-ray Irradiation and Dust Evolution
Detailed models for the density and temperature profiles of gas and dust in protoplanetary disks are constructed by taking into account X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation from a central T Tauri star, as well as dust size growth and settling toward the disk midplane. The spatial and size distributions of dust grains in the disks are numerically computed by solving the coagulation equation fo...
متن کاملMolecular hydrogen emission from protoplanetary disks
We have modeled self-consistently the density and temperature profiles of gas and dust in protoplanetary disks, taking into account irradiation from a central star. Making use of this physical structure, we have calculated the level populations of molecular hydrogen and the line emission from the disks. As a result, we can reproduce the observed strong line spectra of molecular hydrogen from pr...
متن کاملGas and Dust Emission at the Outer Edge of Protoplanetary Disks
We investigate the apparent discrepancy between gas and dust outer radii derived from millimeter observations of protoplanetary disks. Using 230 and 345 GHz continuum and CO J=3-2 data from the Submillimeter Array for four nearby disk systems (HD 163296, TW Hydrae, GM Aurigae, and MWC 480), we examine models of circumstellar disk structure and the effects of their treatment of the outer disk ed...
متن کاملProtoplanetary Gas Disks in the Far Infrared
The physical and chemical conditions in young protoplanetary disks set the boundary conditions for planet formation. Although the dust in disks is relatively easily detected as a far-IR photometric “excess” over the expected photospheric emission, much less is known about the gas phase. It seems clear that an abrupt transition from massive optically thick disks (gas–rich structures where only ∼...
